The Thursday Murder Club
Sometimes you see a book in so many places that you just know it must be interesting. I was also told the author was really good after I bought the books so my expectations were pretty high.
The Book in short
In a peaceful retirement village, four unlikely friends meet up once a week to investigate unsolved murders.
But when a brutal killing takes place on their very doorstep, the Thursday Murder Club find themselves in the middle of their first live case. Elizabeth, Joyce, Ibrahim and Ron might be pushing eighty but they still have a few tricks up their sleeves.
Can our unorthodox but brilliant gang catch the killer before it’s too late?

My thoughts
I found this book to be interesting, more so than I thought I would if I am honest. It reminded me a little bit of the YA book one of us is lying (read that review here). The four main characters in the Thursday murder club are living in a retirement home which really is similar to secondary school is it not? They have formed a club to solve cold cases. The setting as well as the club aspects reminded me a bit of this Dutch author who lives in a retirement home and has a club with his neighbours to do fun things. I think the setting in itself is very interesting.
The premise of the story is that someone locally dies, and this club looks into the case. They’re already an established group which makes it fun for us to get to know them. While you read, it does feel as if they already know each other.
I thought the angle of having a police POV was very interesting and helped the story to move forward. It took me a bit to get into it, especially with the changing pov’s that were different and the chapters were Joyce writes in her journal. They were interesting and added to the book but it did contribute to me needing a bit more time to get into it completely.
I thought some things were a bit um unrealistic, in a similar way to Good Girls Guide to Murder, you can read about that book here. I think it might just be a bit of British thriller/ the mystery novel trope. I mean the police aren’t incompetent so surely they can figure it out without someone else doing things that are or should be illegal but at the end of the day, it is a story, not real life.
I have the next books in the series because I bought them on offer. Overall the book was fun and I will be reading the next one in the series. This is one of those books that you would tell your grandmother about your mom about so that can be fun, to both read it.
