Love in the time of Serial killers – Alicia Thompson

I would be lying if I said I did not buy this book because of the cover because I absolutely did. I thought the cover was cute and I found the synopsis to be somewhat interesting. Of course, that is not the best reason to read a book, but it didn’t let me down.

The Book in short
Turns out that reading nothing but true crime isn’t exactly conducive to modern dating – and one woman is going to have to learn how to give love a chance when she’s used to suspecting the worst.

PhD candidate Phoebe Walsh has always been obsessed with true crime. She’s even analysing the genre in her dissertation – if she can manage to finish writing it. It’s hard to find the time while she spends the summer in Florida, cleaning out her childhood home, dealing with her obnoxiously good-natured younger brother, and grappling with the complicated feelings of mourning a father she hadn’t had a relationship with for years.

It doesn’t help that she’s low-key convinced that her new neighbour, Sam Dennings, is a serial killer (he may dress business casual by day, but at night he’s clearly up to something). But it’s not long before Phoebe realises that Sam might be something much scarier – a genuinely nice guy who can pierce her armour to reach her vulnerable heart.

My thoughts
I found the book quite funny. The main character is a plus-size girl and I only figured this out when she talked about a store that I don’t know but have heard online that it is a store for larger girls. Later in the book she does address it and alludes to the fact that this has influenced her a lot in her life. I think that if you are a larger girl and you like to read a book with a bit of representation this book did that really well.

Phoebe meets Sam and she thinks he is a serial killer and I feel he did not do anything to deserve that type of scrutiny. She also was a bit here and there with what she wanted within the context of the story it did make sense. But without the layer of her thinking he was a serial killer and the story not backing that up at all it would be a very mediocre love story if I’m honest.

It was a fun love story, but not as dramatic as I would have thought from the synopsis and the title. It was very light-hearted with a good ending so I would say if you are in the mood for a romance this might be the book for you.
